Sears Encourages Young Canadian Designers of the Future

The 13th Annual National High School Design Competition drew almost 300 entries from locations coast to coast.  The highlight was a student submission in the Industrial Design category where students were asked to revamp their school's locker system. Entries were extremely strong and the judges deliberated heavily before deciding the winner in the senior category to be Philip So of A.R. MacNeill Secondary School in Richmond British Columbia.  Philip was then awarded the George J. Klein medal for being the overall winner in this year's competition.

This annual competition is a partnership between Design Exchange & the School of Industrial Design at Carlton University. The aim of the competition is to promote the study and awareness of various design disciplines, in schools across Canada.  The competition is open to all high school or CEGEP students. All entries were to be universally designed to be usable by all people, regardless of size, age, or ability to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.

This program rolls out across Canada in the fall of each year and culminates in an awards ceremony and exhibition. Award winning entries are on display on the ground floor of the Design Exchange from June 4 through 22nd.

The National High School Design Competition runs each year thanks to the generous support of Sears Canada, who recognize the role design plays in the creation of a brighter future. Teknion Furniture is also a supporter this program.
