Dear Staff and Volunteers,

On Thursday February 21st, 2008 the DX celebrated the 2nd annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. This event is to show our appreciation for all the hard work that our volunteers put in here at the DX in 2007. Every volunteers that joins our team is looking for a way to give back to the design community. Our Volunteer programs consists of 56 volunteers that range from weekly volunteers that staff have the pleasure of seeing once a week to special event volunteers whom we see on an event basis. Regardless of the amount of time these volunteers give, their assistance and help is priceless. Being a non-profit organization we depend on them to voluntarily give their time to us to help out with things like the box office, administration, exhibit installation and tear down, and special events like the Annual Funraising Gala and the DXA's.

Volunteers of the past

DX Volunteers of 2007

We currently have over 50 active volunteers and we continue to recruit volunteers for a variety of positions and projects on an on-going basis. In 2007 our volunteers logged just under 1500 hours at the DX. Every year the Design Exchange awards two outstanding volunteers for their time given in 2007. This year the two volunteers that received this award were Kristi Showers and Debbie Bunze.

Kristi is currently living in Chicago as a graphic designer. She started volunteering here in October 06 during her studies at International Academy of Design. She worked projects like the CONNECT rack card, the DXA graphics and helped alot with the Japan Opening tickets. She completed research for our Canadian Design Directory and a complete compiled list of every museum in Canada. In 2007 we awarded her with an honorarium of $200 for the amazing amount of time and dedication she gave to the DX. We miss you dearly Kristi.

Debbie is currently living in Toronto with her husband aspiring to become a full time graphic designer. Coincidentally, Debbie was also in the graphic design program at the International Academy of Design like Kristi. Debbie helped out many times in the resource centre for Daniela. She also volunteered at the CNE at our booth for a day. She helped tremendously with the gala; sewing pillows, gift bag stuffing and even during the event was greeting guests with Dianne Ward. She was very comfortable behind the desk and was up for any and all jobs around the office. Thanks for all your help Debbie, we miss you around here.

It's important to show each volunteer that they are needed and appreciated. No matter what job it could be, big or small they are here to help. Please make sure you get to know our volunteers, say "hi" to them, get to know them and get familiar with their schedules. the more they feel like part of the team the more eager and willing they are to help.

Our volunteers come and go as most of them are in school and are very busy with their studies or trying to break into the industry. 2007 was a very successful year for recruiting volunteers. 2008 has proven to already have a positive response to the many job postings that have been put online for volunteering. Please keep those projects coming so we can keep those volunteers busy and show them how valuable they really are to the Design Exchange!

Below are comments made by staff about how helpful our volunteers are...

"Debbie Bunze is the best thing since sliced bread"
                                                          Catherine Molnar

"Debbie brought maturity, professionalism and a willingness to roll up her sleeves - particularly around the Gala."

"Kristi wanted to get something valuable out of her time here and did some excellent graphic work for us."

                                                          Claudine Crangle

"The volunteers are great here. They're delightful to work with and always enthusiastic about helping around the DX. Our volunteers take time out from their busy to schedules to lend us a hand and we appreciate them tremendously. They also enjoy working with us because everyone in our staff are friendly and some take the time to get to know our volunteers. Some of our volunteers have developed good relationships with us and our staff."

                                                          Jessica Li

"The volunteers who have contributed to our 2007 season have been a dedicated, flexible and industrious team of workers. They have helped significantly with our day-to-day administration duties, maintenance of our website and museum space and have been very generous with their time in preparation of large events, our speaker series, and exhibition openings. Our team of volunteers are always eager to help with the plethora of tasks the Design Exchange offers on a daily basis, ranging from being the "elevator attendant" to simple design projects and integrating updates onto our website."

Jade Kwong

"Trinette was so helpful and accommodating with our camp logo redesign! Her kicky design is sure to boost our summer registration!"
