Design Exchange Summer Camps – 2008
The Design Exchange offers engaging design-based summer camps for young designers aged 7 to 16. Sessions run weekly from July 7th to August 29th, 2008. Conveniently located in the heart of Toronto’s financial district, the former Toronto Stock Exchange building offers a unique and inspiring setting for these specialized camp sessions. Programs are led by a qualified and creative team of counsellors, senior camp staff, and visiting design professionals.
This year’s line up of design camps is sure to engage your young designer. Don’t delay; register early to ensure a spot in Toronto’s most prestigious summer program.
Week 1 – July 7th to 11th
Eco Fashion – ages 10 to 14
Young designers will explore the world of Eco Fashion by looking at current designers who are working with alternative fabrics, such as bamboo, soy and corn fiber. Projects will include hand printed organic cotton that will then be used to make a wrap skirt or tote bag.
Rock Star Design – ages 7 to 12 FULL!
No microphone required! Young designers will create a fictitious, ultra-hip music group that will ultimately need their album cover, tour poster, costumes, and sets designed. All of which can make or break even the best band!
Week 2 – July 14th to 18th
Fashion Forward – ages 7 to 12 FULL!
The DX crystal ball got chipped at the last Gala so we need to turn to the next generation of rising fashion designers to find out what the future looks like. Definitely a “think outside the box” kind of camp, participants will need to unleash all of their creative energy and help us design past 2009.
Design For Change – ages 10 to 14
Changing the world is no small task but we think we can do it with the help of some motivated and highly creative young designers! Projects like Guerilla Gardening, where we will beautify a spot somewhere in the city, and Recycled Fashion, which will reinvent some tired pieces into something new and fresh, are some first steps on the road to saving the planet.
Week 3 – July 21st to 25th
Fashion Intensive – ages 14 to 17
This two-week camp will look at the fashion design process from initial sketch to final product. Participants will meet experts in the industry while learning pattern drafting, sewing techniques and finishing. No experience necessary, just a passion for fashion!
Design Circus – ages 7 to 11
There is a lot of designing to do on our way to the big top! Graphically speaking there will be posters, and on the fashion front we will be meeting a costume designer before attempting the design of our own circus garb. No death-defying feats in this camp, just eye-popping design and lots of fun.
Week 4 – July 28th to August 1st
Fashion Intensive continued
Dine Design – ages 7 to 11 FULL!
In today’s world of celebrity chefs, restaurant design is big business. Young designers will create their own mock-bistro, from the graphics on the menu to the décor and layout of the space. Family and friends are invited to join us on the last afternoon for a mock opening, complete with treats!
Week 5 – August 5th to 8th (pro-rated short week)
Fashion in the Bag – ages 10 to 14
Fashion is nothing without the right accessories. In this camp we will dissect the anatomy of the clutch purse and wallet and then recreate our own. And for the more casual days of summer, a small tote or backpack project will round out this week.
Creature Comforts – ages 7 to 11 FULL!
Not just another stuffed toy, oh no, the creatures created in this camp are sure to be beyond cool. Visiting toy designers will walk us through the creature design process before we get out the stuffing. The week will end with us creating environments for our new friends, as well as some packaging and marketing materials.
Week 6 – August 11th to 15th
Couture – ages 12 to 16
Lovers of couture will have the opportunity to explore the fashion houses of Paris without ever leaving Toronto, in this two-week camp. The feathers will fly as participants learn draping, sewing, and specialized finishing techniques. Young designers won’t be over-night Valentinos, but they will have a taste of the steps involved in getting there.
Design by Nature – ages 10 to 14
This camp will explore design inspired by the natural world. Projects will include Tree House Architecture, and Reinvented Landscape where we will meet with an expert before designing our dream gardens. No green thumb is required, just a love for all things nature.
Week 7 – August 18th to 22nd
Couture continued
Hero Design – ages 7 to 11
Super-powers do not a superhero make. Young designers will need to create their characters, design their costumes and develop their marketing campaigns. A visit from a local comic designer should inspire, as will a taste of the world of claymation.
Week 8 – August 25th to 29th
Bling – ages 7 to 12
From belts to bracelets, young designers will explore the world of accessories. Projects will include reworking old jewellery into fresh new pieces, and making accessories from non-traditional objects. The only prerequisite is a touch of glamour and an eye for detail.
Rock Star Design – ages 10 to 14
No microphone required! Young designers will create a fictitious, ultra-hip music group that will ultimately need their album cover, tour poster, costumes, and sets designed. All of which can make or break even the best band!
