 The
attempt to characterize Canadian design occurs in endless debates
– producing but one defining characteristic: Canada is
a country of immigrants. Its’ soul derives from the mixing
of people from all tints and shades. It is as critical to Canada’s
wisdom as are the many species of maple leaves that dance across
the landscape in a chilly Canadian autumn season.
We are an international culture, though
we are still humbled by the great Canadian vastness and its
expanses of ghosted territories. We are multicultural, yet
singular in our belief that perhaps Canada offers greater
opportunity. We are accepting. We are humanists and we unite
in caring for each other, regardless of origin. We are a sieve.
We welcome those who pass through and celebrate those who
stay. We are thirty million people in nine million square
kilometers, mostly hugging the southern border and reaching
for warmth under the northern lights during long cold winters.
Whether born in Canada, educated
in Canada, or Canadian by virtue of choice, we claim many
designers as our own. Canada seasons designers and we hap
esigner, Jonathan Crinion, practice in the UK and South Africa,
but still calls Ottawa home. Teknion’s acclaimed
office systems and Keilhauer’s stunningly stylish
tables and chairs are also world-renowned.
In the realm of fashion, Roots
has tapped into Canada’s national heritage with its
emblematic and wildly popular clothing designs. Fashion innovators
Dean and Dan, on the other hand, have taken Canadian fashion
in another direction entirely with their acclaimed D-Squared
lines. And then there is Bruce Mau, who has exported
his design-is-life philosophy to every corner of the globe.

The achievements of these Canadian
design legends are remarkable, but as the 21st century
dawns, Canada is making way for a new generation of design
leaders. As Canada’s only national centre for design,
the Design Exchange is proud to present Canada
Goes Wild!, a showcase of 15 of the most exciting
new designers working in Canada today. Canada Goes Wild!
is part of Canada’s contribution to the 2005 World’s
Fair in Aichi, Japan, and it reflects the theme of EXPO
2005: Nature’s Wisdom. It also reflects
the theme of Digifest 2005 (Design
Exchange’s annual festival of digital design.
Here is a vision of Canadian
design that reflects the vitality and diversity of our
land and people; that builds on the past to conquer
the future; that welcomes both the natural and urban
wilderness without irony or nostalgia, but as a soulful
collaborator in the design of a more compelling, creative
and vital future. At Aichi in 2005, Canada Goes
Wild!
