“ Downsview Park: planning through the development of a model sustainable community”

(PDP) seeks to transform the site into a unique urban recreation greenspace for the enjoyment of future generations on a self financing base. Mr. Genco has served Parc Downsview Park Inc. for more than seven years, demonstrating the leadership necessary to guide this immense, innovative undertaking. James Kirkpatrick
Urban Designer, FXFowle Architects, Manhattan
“ Landscape Manufacturing”

More than 700 hectares of public park space is currently being designed across Toronto, an area equivalent to the entire city core. This significant new generation of parks presents an exceptional opportunity to understand the role of the park in the production of urban form, and in the transformation of major urban centres.

James Kirkpatrick holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Guelph University, and a Masters of Architecture from UBC. His thesis project, Celeb, inspired simultaneously by Guy Debord, and Britney Spears, was an analysis of the devices of celebrity as image within the architectural design process. He is currently researching the critical potential of landscape as image through recent design projects for orphan spaces in Toronto and the Hobart Waterfront, and an upcoming exhibition on landscape as generator of urban form. He has been involved in academics at Guelph, Waterloo, and Ryerson Universities.

“ Little Green House on the Prairie”

Echo Haven is an important ‘next step’ in the demonstration and promotion of energy secure, healthy, and low-impact housing on a community scale. The project will have 25 Net Zero homes and community amenities on six and a half acres. Other features of the development include 100% storm water retention on-site, a grey water treatment system, common shared renewable energy generation on-site, zero greenhouse gas emissions, solar heating and the retention of a beautiful aspen parkland setting. Echo Haven has overcome many barriers and regulatory obstacles in order to break ground this year. The first home will be one of the 12 winners of the national CMHC EQuilibrium demonstration house competition.

Dave Spencer is a landscape architect with over 30 years experience in the planning and design of housing projects, resorts, campuses and residential communities. His interests have focused on sustainable design for all types of projects. For the past eight years he has been developing the vision for Echo Haven, a new green neighbourhood in the City of Calgary breaking ground in the summer of this year. This project offers an alternative to conventional suburban development. Dave is a principal and future resident of Echo Haven and has been actively promoting the ideals of holistic sustainable design and the importance of nature close to home.
