“ Peoples City vs. Icon City”
Taking the Le Corbusier-designed Indian city of Chandigarh as
a case study, Dr. Malik will examine the paradox between a legendary
designer’s iconic vision and an urban centre which is essentially

density. |

Catherine Venart
Assistant Professor, Dalhousie University, School of Architecture
“ The Presence of Nature in the Canadian Psyche”
Embedded in the Canadian psyche or imagination, is the physical
nature of our landscape, and its ungraspable and overwhelming
sense of the infinite. This lecture will investigate the evolving
relationship
that we, as Canadians, have with our natural environment. The
roots and adaptations of this relationship will be illustrated
through
examples of our built environment, namely architecture. It will
track specific threads of influence, from Native, European and
American ‘ideals, methods or customs’, imported into
the ‘wilderness’ of Canada and transformations which
occurred in the process of manifesting our built environment.
Catherine Ann Somerville Venart is currently an Assistant Professor
in the School of Architecture, Dalhousie University and founder
of iip - international idea pool architecture and urban design.
Her interdisciplinary design projects include urban/landscape and
architectural projects, interiors, exhibitions, and competitions.
Her interest lies in the symbiotic relationship between the conceptualization
of ideas and modes of making, which cross between the technical,
the material, the perceptual and the experiential. Catherine was
educated as both artist and engineer from Mount Allison University
and University of Toronto. |
