Dear Members and Friends......
The word ‘design’ has become as ubiquitous
as engineering was in the 80s. At a recent meeting,
an attendee announced that after all the businesses
with which they had been involved, she had finally found
herself: she was a designer!
Some nodded, I cringed. In the great tradition of 'sanitation
engineer' (janitor), I am no longer surprised when I
meet designers of all disciplines – including
people who ‘design’ businesses, ‘design’
strategies, ‘design’ fingernails and ‘design’
Kleenex sculptures.
What’s wrong with the word ‘create’?
Many of the popular television programs have watered
down the value that designers provide, and now self-declarations
of ‘designer’ have started to gain popularity.
Design is a process. Design is a strategy. Design is
function and form. Design is art and science. Design
is analysis and synthesis. While there are people with
natural design capabilities, good design requires education
and practice. Whether architecture, interiors, landscape,
graphic, industrial, or fashion, the design process
is a learned capability. Core design disciplines are
expanding to include specialties and they all share
the same basic principles and elements of design, critical
level of thinking and influence on our health, safety
and well-being. And while I agree that the design process
is the most successful ‘way of thinking’,
I don’t believe everyone who uses the process
is a designer. So, when you meet the birdhouse architect,
the business designer and the relationship designer,
please send them our way!
One year ago, we began shifting the Design Exchange
programs to expand our audience. Programs such as the
speaker series and summer camps are very successful.
However, our journey is far from complete. Upcoming
soon are more education programs, such as the National
Design Conference and corporate seminars for designers
and businesses. Get involved, become a member and support
us with your presence and your ideas. Take the new DX
Survey on-line, its your voice, its your Design
Exchange!
See you at the DX!
