Dear Members and Friends,

We are having a great time here this summer! The future is here at the DX - in the form of kids, kids, kids! Teaching young people about the importance of design is part of our mission at the DX and we are always astonished at the ideas that the children create. In fact, we have many repeat campers that I consider young design ‘prodigies’ and I expect they will be the stars of the Canadian design scene 10-15 years from now. One young member, who also happens to be the youngest official member of the DX, has been a camper since we started camps 4 years ago. From fashion to architecture, this kid has it going on! Most recently, after dreaming of a Paris trip for years, his dream came true. While every child cannot afford a trip to Paris, the staff tries to ensure that no child who dreams of becoming a designer is denied a spot at the DX camps. Thanks to the DX Board of Directors, led by volunteer chairman Frank Delfino, sponsorship for kid′s camps was born. We often receive requests from DARE Arts and other creative programs, requesting a spot for a young designer. If you would like to sponsor a child, please email claudine@dx.org for more information. Sponsorship is $500 per child. This covers registration fees, lunches, snacks, and transportation to and from the DX. I hope you are enjoying the summer!

Pet Peeve
Skirting the UD issue.
Many times, as designers (and clients), we skirt the issue of Universal Design. Recently, when giving a workshop, I asked the audience if anyone had or has considered themselves disabled. Silence. No one raised their hands. I asked if anyone had ever broken a leg. Hands raised. An arm? Two arms, two legs, broken back? Not surprisingly, I had an audience full of people who had been disabled at some point in their lives. One gentleman had two broken legs from a skiing accident. One person suffered two broken arms from a motorcycle accident. One woman had a broken back. In life, our bodies and their abilities change constantly. Our time as children is frustrating and our time as elderly people will be challenging. Our health is unpredictable. It is the responsibility of the designer to design for all abilities to the maximum extent possible - knowing that at any given time - the users of the products or environments may have varying abilities. Design for all.
