Dear Members and Friends,

Happy New Year!  I hope that all of you had a peaceful and wonderful holiday season.

My spirit was a bit melancholy  - as I watched the demolition of the former Bata Shoe Headquarters in North York.  Designed in 1964 by John Parkin, I considered the building one of the finest examples of 60’s architecture and of Parkin’s work.  Although, I knew it was to be demolished after it sold in 2005, I held out hope that the new owners would find a way to incorporate it into their new plan for the site.  Set atop a grassy hill and raised above the ground, the building was a great example of modernist architecture.  Although it was not designated a historical building (which perplexes me to this day), I am sad that is was discarded like an old shoe (pun intended).  When we erase all memories of the built past, the character of the city changes.  In my opinion, it changes for the worse.  As a society, we should strive to preserve the icons that contribute so greatly to Canada’s culture and economy – people and buildings.  In our zest to build the future, we should not erase the past.

We have a great year planned for you in 2008.  I hope you take time to join us at the DX for upcoming exhibits, workshops, forums and lectures.  We enjoy seeing you at the events and it is a great opportunity to network and renew old friendships.  If you are not a member of the DX, consider becoming one.  Your support means a lot to our staff who work so hard to keep design top of mind across Canada.

Sam

The Garbage System
How many of you spend an excessive amount of time managing the garbage in your household or business?  In my household, we struggle to overcome the inefficiency of the entire system by inventing smaller systems within our house to collect and separate the garbage.  In my moderately small house, we have ‘pared’ down the garbage receptacles to 11 (plus one garbage disposal, which is not used regularly).  We buy blue bags for recycling, compostable brown bags for kitchen organics, paper yard bags for leaves and yard waste, and plastic bags for regular garbage.  Garbage is collected, separated, bagged, and taken outside to a staging area in a ‘garbage closet’.  Overflow is placed into the garage.  We must remember the days in which the city collect recycling, organic garbage, ‘regular’ garbage, and yard waste.  We are lucky if the garbage collectors take the garbage, as more often than not, they leave something behind because it violates that day’s pick-up.  Most recently, I learned that 80% of Toronto’s organic garbage cannot be processed in the city and is trucked to Quebec for processing – and I assume that there are still trucks making the daily haul across the border.  Do other cities across Canada operate similarly?  Are we happy sticking on band-aids indefinitely?  It is time that we ‘reset’ and re-imagine the garbage system.  This one stinks!
