PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE
Dear
Members and Friends,
During the summer at the DX, we focus on our future. Our children.
Summer camps at the DX were started three years ago to give
children design experience in a downtown environment. While
the themes vary from session to session, they all have the
design process in common. And while we give them a fun, creative
summer, they give us so much more!
We have several repeat campers that I look forward to seeing
every year – one young boy – who has been sewing
since he was five years old – is sure to be the next
Franco Mirabelli or Alfred Sung. We have a brother and sister
team that are not only creative, but show great logical thought
in their processes. And last summer, we had child who had
a surprising amount of architectural knowledge.
The staff members really look forward to the kids and I especially
like sneaking away from my desk to work with them. They bring
us so much energy and vibrancy and continue to inspire us
to work for the future.
I believe that it is important to work toward the future and
honour the past. At the DX, we focus on Canadian design –
past and present. Currently, we are working on an exhibit
entitled, Canada in the Making, which will profile pieces
of our permanent collection. This exhibit will remind many
of our history and help to give newcomers a quick lesson in
Canadian Industrial Design.
This past spring, I asked designers to help with a town demolished
by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Our little town in southern
Louisiana is still fighting off the alligators and is full
of debris. However, I expect the green light any day now to
begin help for its redevelopment. Thanks to all of the volunteers
who expressed interest in helping. I expect to have news soon.
I hope you all have a great summer. Include the DX in your
summer plans. Stop by or call me for a visit.
Sam

DESIGN
BUZZ FROM WINNIPEG By Sandra
Sasaki
Graphic
Design: In a bold move, The Winnipeg Free Press, the 132-year
old Winnipeg newspaper has implemented one of the most dramatic
changes ever made in the paper’s history – they’ve
stopped putting news stories on their front page. The Press
wanted their readers to know what was inside, and where to
find it, at a glance. So, their front page has now been redesigned
to let people know how much interesting news and information
there is inside – a kind of graphic menu if you like.
There are summaries and pointers to about a dozen stories
a day – all on the front page.Readers have long told
newspaper editors that they don’t like having to turn
pages to find the rest of an article that begins on the front
page – did you know that between 80 and 90 percent of
readers stop reading when a story continues inside? So now,
you don’t have to turn pages to finish a story –
it’ll all be in one place – self-contained. It’s
revolutionary and evolutionary - as American newspaper expert
Tim Porter puts it - no other major broadsheet newspaper in
Canada has gone so far. Personally I like it - it’s
like being on a website and clicking on an icon or graphic
to get more details.
