Sure it’s cool – I designed it myself! What if you could design your own bike, running shoes, school bag or gown? What would it look like? How would it work? Where would the idea come from? Design is a key component to changing the prospects of future generations. We all know that summer camp is a great way to form new friendships and break out of regular patterns and this year’s line up of summer design camps at the Design Exchange is sure to engage. There’s something here for young designers with an interest in distinct disciplines like fashion or campers can play with themes like heroes, speed, and ecology all through the lens of design. For the forward thinking designer there are camps where bigger ideas like “designing for change” and “design by nature” are investigated. Camps run weekly through July and August and are open to young designers aged 7 to 16. A qualified and creative team of counselors, senior camp staff, and visiting design professionals lead programs. This downtown camp has the convenience of subway access, curbside drop-off and extended care. Katie Weber, Youth Education Coordinator and Camp Director at the Design Exchange is very excited about the early interest in her new camp programs for 2008. “Rock Star Design Camp was fully booked by the end of March!” She would advise that parents sign up their prodigies early this year.
