Dear Readers and Friends,
This past Saturday, Paola Poletto (our Sr. Director of Programs) and I led a design charrette as volunteers to help one of Toronto’s priority neighborhood communities. We encountered some very active youth and community members who are passionate about making their living environment better. The results of the charrette will be used to help the community members apply for a grant to help make their site function better.
As a relative newcomer to Canada, I learned a lot about Toronto Community Housing, its function, operation and lack of funding to provide DECENT environments for those who need help. As a former U.S. resident who was absolutely sick of discrimination in the southern states and the serious (and growing) divide between the wealthy and the poor, I am flabbergasted at the state of public housing in a country that prides itself on social responsibility.
In 2001, The Province of Ontario downloaded the cost of public housing to the City of Toronto – and the shortfall is obvious. There is an approximate $300 million capital repair gap (and growing) in social housing and it is a critical state of disrepair. Approximately 165,000 people, 66,000 of whom are children, live in sub-standard conditions.
Not only do residents live with leaky roofs, unsafe balconies, non-functioning doors and fire code violations – but they also live with housing infrastructure that is rapidly failing. One example in our group was a resident and community leader who had sewerage leaking from her son’s bedroom ceiling due to an overflowing system.
IS IT or IS IT NOT, a basic right in Canada to have DECENT housing? Canadian homes provide a sense of stability, security and dignity. The effect of living in substandard and deteriorating housing is monumental on children – and it is not what our elderly deserve. It is imperative that our provincial and federal governments wake up. A strong foundation builds a strong economy and a strong future. Investment in public housing encourages investment in the surrounding areas – by attracting businesses and supportive services. The connection between DESIGN, QUALITY OF LIFE and the ECONOMY screamed at me on Saturday and it is still screaming. Can you hear it?

Our Federal Government Leaders
Last week, our federal government leaders announced an enormous federal surplus. Why? Look around. School buildings, most over 50 years old, are falling apart. There is rampant deteriorating public housing. Our transportation systems, including the railway system, are outdated. Our roads and bridges need attention. The announcement sparked debate on a GST reduction. Note to the FEDERAL LEADERS: please, please, please - keep my pennies and do something about the infrastructure of our country.
