PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Members and Friends,
Dear Members and Friends,

This week was Canadian Thanksgiving.

I admit that I have a little design game that I play when I am at home. It’s called, ‘Everything Design’. Whatever I am doing, I make mental notes about my interaction with the environment, objects and experience and pose the following question: “How can this be better designed?”

As you can imagine, a day in the kitchen preparing the Thanksgiving feast makes for a busy mental exercise. From my Kitchen Aid oven and Bosch dishwasher to the Blanco water faucet, I always find ways to improve the design of the products used in my kitchen. (FYI – the control panel on the oven, the acoustics of the dishwasher, and the counterweight on the faucet need improvement.) I also ponder the over-designed appliances (or bad decisions) such as my super-splurge microwave/convection oven, which I only use to boil water.

Much of the time, I focus on my dream idea – the self-cleaning kitchen, which uses materials that either clean themselves or maximize their ability to be cleaned easily. Ahh! What a concept! If someone knows of a self-cleaning floor (beyond the toe kick vacuum), please let me know.

The plan of the appliance layout, preparation area and cabinetry is almost perfect in my kitchen and reminds me that those peewee basketball ‘pivot’ exercises may have had value. However, despite a reasonably well designed, but modest, kitchen, I usually collapse in bed at midnight with an aching back – and then take time to count my blessings – three of which I want to share with you:

1) I am thankful for the opportunity to lead the DX. We encourage people to value design and designers. We know that design creates a better quality of life and a strong economy. Design is important and is a worthy cause.

2) I am thankful for the hardworking DX staff and volunteers – including our Board of Directors. They work hard, under a very lean budget, to make your DX experience valuable.

3) I am thankful for my parents, both of whom I lost this year, for being creative role models. My father was an inventor, a cartoonist and a storey teller. My mother was an independent thinker, a spiritual guide and person who took the road less traveled. I credit them with expanding the mind of a farm girl from the south. I hope that I can do the same for my two little boys.

I encourage you to join me on the path of encouraging others to value design and creativity. Get involved in the DX, support our annual fundraising gala, volunteer, start an initiative, send your children to camp, join a charrette team. We look forward to seeing you here
Sam

He continued to direct and design throughout his career, working with many companies. During the last twenty years of his life, he was driven by his passion to create Canada's first Theatre Museum, to which he donated his extensive collection of designs and theatre memorabilia. Memorial Service at the Arts & Letters Club, 14 Elm St., Toronto at 4:00 p.m. on October 12, 2006. momentum

Opens to the public Sunday October 15th
The Wood WORKS! installation "momentum" was designed to encapsulate the continual growth and acceptance of wood in design and architecture. As Sustainable and Green design continue to gain acceptance, wood is posed like never before to rise to the forefront as a viable, affordable and appropriate solution to many design problems. The Wood WORKS! installation refers back to the inherent simplicity of 'wood' and yet shows that it can be arranged and combined to create provocative and complex forms with ease. The exhibit runs Sunday October 15th to Thursday October 19th and will also showcase the winners of the 2006 Wood WORKS! Awards. Design "momentum": Farrow Partnership Architects Inc. Material:
Weyerhaeuser. Installation: Nexus. The exhibit is organized by Wood WORKS!/The Canadian Wood Council. Free Admission.

Growing the Skyline: A Fresh Perspective on Tall Buildings
Date: Thursday, October 19, 2006
Time
: 7:30AM to 11:30AM
Location: The Westin Harbour Castle, Toronto
To some, skyscrapers are a logical, cost-effective response to the need to accommodate growing populations that can result in dramatic skylines. For others, tall buildings evoke images of dark canyons, windswept streets, and unacceptable levels of congestion. In the face of strong views and conflicting opinion, cities everywhere - Toronto included - are seeking to create coherent policy and design guidelines that meet the test of good planning and increased livability. This Urban Leadership session kicks off an intensive program of learning and discussion on tall buildings with a talk from William Thorsell, whose vision for the ROM at one time contemplated building a tower on the site. There will also be presentations from experts from New York, London and Chicago. Add your voice to the debate.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
William Thorsell, President and CEO, Royal Ontario Museum
MODERATOR:
David Crombie, President and CEO, Canadian Urban Institute
PANELISTS:
NEW YORK: Ray Gastil, Director of Planning, City of New York
LONDON: Lora Nicolaou, Head of Research, Urban Renaissance Institute at Medway, and Director of Urban Strategies, DEGW International Design Consultancy, U.K.
CHICAGO: Sam Assefa, Deputy Director of Urban Design, City of Chicago

DESIGN BUZZ FROM WINNIPEG By Sandra Sasaki
Interior Architecture: With housing costs being traditionally amongst the lowest in Canada, condominiums as a less expensive housing alternative have been in low demand and scarce in Winnipeg. But, with the unprecedented upswing of housing costs in Winnipeg and no doubt the increasing numbers of retiring baby boomers, suddenly condominiums are hot - popping up all over the city particularly in Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District. One of these developments is in the Travellers Building – which celebrates its hundredth birthday next year. Buyers were initially able to purchase residential units on the upper floors as shells and could finish the raw loft space however they wished. Local architects and colleagues at Cohlmeyer Architects, Johanna Hurme and Sasa Radulovic jumped at the chance and came up with the idea of “The Box” - a complete service area containing a fully equipped kitchen, as well as a bathroom, washer and dryer, hot water tank, air conditioning, ducting and clothes closet! Taking up just over 100 square feet, The Box maximizes space, compacts the utilities and eliminates space-eating hallways and room separations. By locating all the plumbing and mechanical on one wall, the costs are halved – a mere $5,000 estimates Radulovic. Radulovic and Hurme call it “living outside the box”*. Strategically placed, the Box becomes a natural division between the various living areas of their lofts without impeding the openness and flow. Now that’s thinking outside the box! ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION IN CANADA
The Canadian Architecture Students Association release a publication on Schools of Architecture in Canada. Not since the release of Ten Schools over a quarter-century ago has a substantially documented publication been specifically produced to survey the ten schools of architecture in Canada. This past year, the Canadian Architecture Students Association (CASA-ACEA) has made a contribution with their release of the Guide to Canadian Graduate Schools of Architecture. Initiated by a grant from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the project served to address several objectives such as improving academic or professionally oriented dialog amongst students, illustrating qualities of student life and elements of progressive learning environments, and for employers, clarifying how each school is offering its own focus or approach to research and practice. Additionally, CASA-ACEA performed student surveys and provided statistical data that offers insight into each school’s studio culture and lifestyle. This publication can be purchased for $10.00 at any school of architecture in Canada. To purchase online visit Ballenford Books. For more information: visit CASA online or contact publication
