Dear Members and Friends,

One of the latest buzzwords in our economy is ‘innovation’.  Simply put, Innovation is the introduction of new ideas, goods, services, and practices - which are intended to be useful.  The main catalyst for innovation is often the courage and energy to better the world.  As designers, we are taught to be innovative in our design processes – to challenge ourselves to create new and exciting solutions for our clients.  Imagine if our government put the power of design to use in its Innovation Platform?  Imagine if we invested in design to improve our aging infrastructure – our schools, hospitals, public housing, city planning, etc.  What if we put our best designers forward as a think tank for Canadian innovation?  Where would we be?  Design is the key component in commercial success but we are not on the government agenda.  We have a new Minister of Industry, The Honourable Jim Prentice, please consider emailing him your concerns.  You can make a difference! minister.industry@ic.gc.ca

Figure 3
Figure Three is one of Canada's most successful interior design firms - and one of their newest creations, the Oasis spa, located in Toronto's distillery district is an absolute gem. The integration between the heavy timber structure and the new interior additions is a visual delight. The design of speciality millwork, finishes and fixtures is second to none. While the services are impeccable, the design of the spa creates the perfect space for physical and mental rejuvination.

Call for Entries!

The DX announces a call to designers of all disciplines across Canada for one of a kind, original bags to be auctioned at our annual fundraising gala. Bag is defined as a flexible container with an opening. This year’s gala theme, 'Feel This' should be the inspiration behind the design. Chosen because of its relationship to texture, visual and physical - as well as its relationship to the emotion that good design evokes, ‘Feel This’ should give designers plenty of room for innovation. The Design Buzz from Winnipeg
submitted by Sandra Sasaki
Fashion Design – the way the story goes, Victoria Beckman (a.k.a. Posh Spice) bought a pair of jeans at a chic L.A. boutique and was so impressed with how well they were made that she asked her people to find out where they were manufactured.  Turns out, they were made in Winnipeg.

After several sightings of the wife of soccer superstar David Beckham in the city, it was confirmed that Beckham’s debut women’s denim collection will be developed and distributed by Winnipeg’s Western Glove Works (the manufacturer of the $650 1921 jeans favoured by celebrities like Teri Hatcher and Jennifer Lopez).  According to the New York City-based industry bible Women’s Wear Daily, Beckham’s dVb collection will include not only jeans but pants, skirts and shorts and will be priced for the “premium or luxury” markets.  The collection which debuted this fall, will be sold in North American, Europe and Asia.

This month’s Pet Peeve is the ubiquitous ‘threshold’ between two rooms.  Although there are recommendations for a maximum height, it is not well regulated or observed by designers, contractors and builders.  The cause of many broken toes (mine included), this is an important issue that affects the quality of life for many people:  children, elderly and those with disabilities.  And of course – those ‘so-called’ normal people whom happen to trip.  Observe please, and watch your step.
