| PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE
Dear
Members and Friends,
In the past, friends have made fun of me for reading the book
‘All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten
’ by Robert Fulghum. While almost everything was learned
in Kindergarten (and at Mardi Gras in New Orleans), there
were also few good tips from my grandmothers. One that I think
of daily is CLEAN UP YOUR OWN MESS.
As a self-professed neat freak (credit the Virgo mentality),
I agonize over the Ontario garbage situation daily. Not only
do I believe that most garbage can be prevented through good
design decisions, I believe that it is our responsibility
as a society and citizens of our earth to make it an Extreme
Priority and fix the problem. In Ontario, shipments of garbage
are sent to the United States weekly as the short-term - going
on long-term – answer. Disgusting. In turn, they ship
stuff to us as well. Double Disgusting.
I refuse to believe that the answer is hard. It’s not.
Ideally, we would reduce the volume of waste by setting strict
government policies regarding manufacturing waste, construction
waste and packaging. Since the government moves at the pace
of a dead turtle, then we must do it ourselves. Voluntarily.
Quit putting bars of soap in little boxes and wrapping them
in plastic! It’s bad. Don’t do it.
Invest is a Gasification System. ‘Gasification’
is not ‘Incineration’ and as scary as it sounds,
it is used widely with success all over the world. Gasification
systems can be integrated into a solid waste management plan
and when used as part of an integrated plan, which includes
recycling, as much as 90% of the total waste stream can be
diverted from the landfill.
The remaining material going to the landfill contains less
organic material, which helps to minimize landfill problems
such as groundwater contamination and methane generation.
Gasification Systems can produce a clean, cool gas, suitable
for direct use in standard internal combustion engines and
the system offers the flexibility for the production of various
forms of energy -- from engine-quality gas, to high volumes
of clean, hot exhaust from a combustor, to liquid alcohol
fuels.
What is required? The feedstock can be municipal solid waste,
plastics, shredded tires, sewage sludges, biomass, wood waste,
automobile shredder residue (AKA Fluff and BTW is coming from
the United States to Canada), and industrial sludges, including
paint sludge. Chip it to a small particle size – about
2 to 3 inches and reduce the moisture content to about 30%.
Heat it up to 5,000 BTU per lb (2,800 kcal per kg) or higher.
(My grandmother would say, don’t open the oven door,
or the cake will fall.) Surprise! GARBAGE CREATES ENERGY.
Two problems solved. Now – my Grandmother can be proud
of that.
Join us this fall. Reserve September 21st for the opening
of our Milano Made in Design exhibit and October 21st for
our fundraising gala! See you at the DX.

Fred
Moffatt
An Appreciation
DX Members and many of our Express readers will know
the work of Fred Moffatt, who passed away on August
2nd at the age of 94. Mr. Moffatt was a nationally recognized
legend of Canadian industrial design. Fred’s career
began in the printing business at Southam Press, and
in time he became a commercial artist and illustrator.
He started his own firm, and while designing graphics
for Canadian General Electric, he was asked to design
a promotional bakelite ashtray in 1938, marketing one
of the earliest instances of Canadian industrial design.
This was followed by his design of the first electric
kettle in 1940. For the next five decades he designed
products for CGE among others, and won two National
Industrial Design Council honours. His design for the
K40 “chrome dome” kettle was so popular,
it was featured on a limited issue Canada Post stamp.
Fred was known to DX staff, who will miss him deeply.
Our sympathies go out to Fred’s family.

8th Annual Canstruction Event in
Toronto 2006
Can you design a better world? Of course. That’s how
you spend your days. But can you feed its people? Yes, you
CAN. Or at least in Toronto, where architects, landscape architects,
engineers, designers and students of these disciplines participate
in the CANSTRUCTION® program. CANSTRUCTION® is an
international event committed to ending hunger. Over the last
7 years, the Toronto event has contributed more than 232,000
pounds of food to The Daily Bread Food Bank. More than 175,000
people in the Greater Toronto Area use food relief programs;
approximately 36% of these are hungry children.
How does it work? Participants design and
build structures made entirely from canned food, in a 10x10x8
space. The build takes place in the TD Centre complex where
the structures remain on display to encourage the public to
help end hunger – and to demonstrate the ingenuity of
Toronto designers!
When and where is it happening?
