Dear Members and Friends,

Recently, I sat in a dismal waiting room to get additional x-rays for my prolonged ankle/foot injury. Looking around, I counted the number of people with leg and arm injuries and decided to take a poll. 100% of the respondents had accidents that were caused from poorly designed environments. For example, an older gentleman had slipped getting out of the shower. A woman had miss-stepped off a stool attempting to retrieve something from a cabinet that was placed too high in her kitchen. A child had fallen because he ran perpendicular to a raised sidewalk - and tripped. A grandmother's wheelchair crashed because the slope of her new ramp was too steep. Of course the waiting room crowd did not connect the 'design' of the environment with their corresponding accident. As I asked the gentleman if a grab bar would have helped prevent the accident - he replied of course, he had installed one once - but it came off the wall as he pulled against it. When questioning the grandmother, I discovered that her ramp was installed by a landscape maintenance contractor, without a building permit and did not have handrails. Design is most importantly a public safety issue. Great design combines the 'science' with the 'art' and creates technically superior, beautiful objects and environments, but designers have an obligation to ensure that their creations (to the maximum extent possible) cause no harm and prevent undue harm from occurring. So for all of those designers who dream of the polished marble entry way - think twice - you are responsible for someone's trip to the emergency room. I hope you all join us at the DX during the upcoming months - we need each other.

CANADIAN DESIGN IS IN THE BAG
Call for Entries! The DX announces a call to designers of all disciplines across Canada for one of a kind, original bags to be auctioned at its annual fundraising gala. Bag is defined as a flexible container with an opening. This year’s gala theme, 'Feel This' should be the inspiration behind the design. Chosen because of its relationship to texture, visual and physical - as well as its relationship to the emotion that good design evokes, ‘Feel This’ should give designers plenty of room for innovation. Pet Peeve

The Stucco Box
Please, I am begging you - don't build a stucco/stone box for your house! It seems like a trend has been started in many parts of Canada - and it is not good. I have witnessed an overwhelming number of homes, mostly postwar structures, transformed into stucco boxes with stone facades. Most have no regard for appropriateness of material, context of neighborhood - and perhaps most importantly to the average Canadian - regard to life cycle and maintenance of material. While stone is easy to maintain, stucco can be tricky. If not applied and formulated properly, moisture damage can be quick and unyielding. It seems that willingness to invest in an architect is not on the radar of most home owners - perhaps fueled by the plethora of contractor led renovation television shows. Additionally, most of the stucco/stone boxes seem to be compiled from building yard leftovers with no regard to an actual architectural 'style'. Many are adorned with stucco medallions, Palladian windows or worse - an octagonal window - centred above the door. Yes, I am mortified - and yearn for a new CMHC catalog of houses - technically sound, sustainable and beautiful. CMHC, just do it - for me, for Canada.
