Worth a Thousand Words: International Theatre Poster Design

November 14–January 17, 2002

This exhibition explores contemporary theatre poster design from around the world. Theatre posters have a unique double life-span. Usually created in advance of a play, they function as informative and persuasive marketing tools. Once the final curtain falls, theatre posters live on as one of the few tangible records of a production. But their appeal goes beyond the nostalgic – great theatre posters become potent visual metaphors for the plays themselves. Organized by Gallery Stratford, this exhibition surveys the best theatre posters produced around the world in the last five years, focusing on the challenge of representing an entire play – or season of plays – in a single image. The exhibit includes 100 international posters selected through a juried competition, as well as a variety of sidebar exhibits based on supporting themes such as Milton Glaser's famous series of paperback book covers for the plays of Shakespeare.
