Call for Participation - Passive Parkette Design Charrette

Passive Park Design Charrette (0.12 ha or 0.3 acres)

The Design Exchange invites you to create a design team to participate in the Passive Parkette Design Charrette (0.12 ha or 0.3 acres). Your team will work in a collaborative planning process that will harnesses your talents and energies to create and support a feasible plan that represents transformative community change.

This call is open to 5 teams led by a landscape architect and consisting of design professionals, community members and students who are interested in a neighbourhood context that can benefit from visionary and socially inclusive design schemes. Individuals working in the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, urban and regional design/planning as well as those who are engaged in more specialized areas of study, such as youth services, accessibility and health care, are highly encouraged to participate. Participating teams will receive an honorarium of $500, and the winning concept will receive a $2000 award. The team projects will be featured in an exhibition at Design Exchange in February, 2007.

Orphan Spaces: Priority Neighbourhoods: Designing Spaces with Young Adults - Fall 2006

This call is open to individual designers across all disciplines. This one day workshop will involve 5 priority neighbourhoods, one design team assembled by DX devoted to each, in the City of Toronto with a focus on designing spaces for kids, in consultation with young adults. This workshop will engage youth, designers and other professionals on multi-disciplinary teams, in exploratory and planning activities. With this workshop, we aim to bridge the gap between the thought processes and ideas of youth and design/sustainability experts, and as a result, meet the needs of communities through collaborative design processes. The charrette will be featured in Canadian Architect Magazine and in an exhibition at Design Exchange in March, 2007.

DX 2006 Fall Charrette


In the Spirit of Massive Change - Fall 2006

In the spirit of Massive Change.
A Charrette Focusing on Sustainability and Social Responsibility
Location: Chicago
Submission Deadline: October 26, 2006
Registration fee: free

This call is open to 6 Toronto-based design students. The design team will consist of 6 students from Toronto and 6 students from Chicago, as well as one design mentor from each city. DX in partnership with the City of Toronto’s Economic Development Office has embarked on an important initiative with Toronto’s partner city, Chicago. Choosing a site in a priority neighbourhood of Chicago the design team will propose a solution for a youth oriented space using guidelines learned from the Massive Change exhibition by Bruce Mau Design and the Institute Without Boundaries and the City Global Visionaries Symposium in Chicago. The team projects will be featured in an exhibition at the Chicago Architecture Foundation before opening at Design Exchange in March, 2007.

The Design Exchange in partnership with the City of Toronto invites you to attend a charrette on Toronto’s Coordinated Street Furniture Program. The program aims to harmonize the design and placement of street amenities to achieve a number of objectives such as: improving the appearance, quality and functionality of street furniture, enhancing pedestrian circulation and safety, and giving Toronto beautiful and identifiable streetscapes.

The purpose of the charrette is to solicit the views of stakeholders from a range of design disciplines and explore the challenges and opportunities involved in integrating design into a Request for Proposals (RFP) that will be issued by the City of Toronto later this year.

Sustainable Design Competition Exhbit


Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA), in partnership with the Design Exchange (DX), have created this competition with the assumption that in the 21st century sustainable design is no longer a luxury; it has become a necessity. Along with this assumption is the belief in the innovation of Canadian designers and their ability to adapt to the changing needs of contemporary society.

As a part of The Living City initiative, Archetype for The Living City: Sustainable House Competition presents a challenge to design teams from across the country to create a single family house that will demonstrate the best in sustainable design and technology. digifest is Canada's annual interdisciplinary festival of the best in innovative new media, art and design from Canada and abroad. "momentum" by Wood WORKS!

The Wood WORKS! installation entitled "momentum" was designed to encapsulate the continual growth and acceptance of wood in design and architecture. As sustainable design and green design continue to gain acceptance, wood is posed like never before to rise to the forefront as a viable, affordable and appropriate
solution to many design problems. "momentum" refers back to the inherent simplicity of 'wood' and yet shows that it can be arranged and combined to create provocative and complex forms with ease.

   
November 6 - 10 Q'ENCO project

Translating the rich Peruvian textile heritage into viable and sustainable contemporary design solutions, this exhibition features collaborations between Toronto designers and traditional Peruvian textile artisans. DesignAid explores how the specialised skills of designers can contribute to the betterment of our communities, locally and internationally.
   
November 16 - December 1

Canstruction

A National Charity of the Design and Construction Industry created by the Society for Design Administration. Competing teams, lead by architects and engineers, showcase their talents by designing giant sculptures made entirely out of canned foods. At the close of the exhibitions all of the food used in the structures is donated to local food banks for distribution to pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, elderly and day care centers.
