New Design Canada will be presented at the upcoming International Contemporary Furniture Fair, May 17-20, 2008 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. The New Design Canada booth # 2524, will feature ROLLOUT Custom Wallpaper and furniture by Dan Planko Design, both from Vancouver, British Columbia; furnishings from Geoffrey Lilge Design in Edmonton, Alberta; Tsunami Glassworks Inc. from Windsor, Ontario; and a site specific lighting installation by Quebec designer Pascale Girardin.
This is the sixth year that New Design Canada has showcased Canadian talent at ICFF. The exhibit provides a glimpse at the extraordinary sophistication and creativity that is now apparent in Canadian design. Many of the designers featured in this exhibit have made inroads into the US design market, collaborating with American interior designers, artists and architects to create one–of-a kind products and design solutions.

Please join the New Design Canada participants to celebrate their work and support their fellow Canadian designers who will be featured in the exhibition “Wry & Ginger by Azure”. The exhibition was curated by Azure to celebrate Design Within Reach’s recent expansion into Canada. A public reception with Azure magazine editors and some of the featured designers will be held at Design Within Reach at 408 West 14th Street on Sunday, May 18, from 6-8 pm. The display runs from May 16 through noon on May 22.
ROLLOUT Custom Wallpaper
ROLLOUT Custom Wallpaper a creative studio that designs and digitally prints custom wallpapers has collaborated with a number of artists and designers and clients have included Microsoft Zune and Marc Ecko Clothing. Versatility has been the studio’s trademark and they will present a selection of their most recent releases including “Sultry Hair”, visions of foxy ladies created by Brooklyn artist Andrio Abero ; “Adopt-a-Monster” designer Sonja Schneider’s whimsical kid’s room paper that will have them coloring in the creatures; and “Parrot Fly” an exquisite traditional design with a twist, created by ROLLOUT principals Anita Modha, Jonathan Nodrick and artist David Hall. www.rollout.ca
Tsunami Glassworks
Tsunami Glassworks principals Eva Milinkovic and Kriston Gene specialize in designing and producing both blown and cast glass for residential and commercial environments. They will present a new mouth blown product called “TUBES” in groupings that are four feet tall in various color ranges, plus a large 3x3x10ft chandelier created by Toronto’s Ridgely Studio Works, made out of the TUBE components. www.tsunamiglassworks.com
Geoffrey Lilge
Geoffrey Lilge who is probably best known in Canada and the US for the ground breaking work he did as founding partner and design director of Pure Design, a Canadian manufacturer of furniture and accessories, strikes out on his own at this year’s ICFF. Lilge will introduce his new design consultancy, a number of table top items and several seating prototypes including a chair and lounge chair featuring solid maple frames with bendywood components, plus bent plywood and fiberglass seats and backs. www.geoffreylilge.com
Dan Planko
Dan Planko, will feature a variety of tables from his highly unique Corian and wenge console table with mirror, to the “On the Fly” side tables. For this piece Planko has teamed up with fellow Vancouver designers ROLLOUT Custom Wallpaper who have designed the applied surface treatment for the tables.www.plankodesign.com
Pascale Girardin
Pascale Girardin, one of Canada’s most innovative designers, has collaborated on projects with the Rockwell Group and Yabu Pushelberg and is known for her large-scale ceramic installations in restaurants, offices and hotels both in the US and abroad. She’ll be exploring new territory at ICFF with the installation of a six-foot diameter backlit resin ring produced in collaboration with Lumid Lightingtools of Montreal. Mounted on the wall the ring both emits light and is backlit with LED lighting, creating a glowing sculptural presence in the space. www.pascalegirardin.com
New Design Canada
New Design Canada is a DX initiative to support design firms through training, printed and online sales materials, trade missions and trade shows. It aims to target key markets with export potential with the goal of raising the awareness, sales and brand of Canadian design through consistent messaging.
Previous activities have included presentations and exhibitions in Australia, Singapore, Japan, United States, England and Italy. In 2005, DX conducted a trade mission to Japan during Expo 2005 and organized the first major Canadian presence at ICFF in New York and 100% Design in London.
In 2006, we returned to ICFF and participated in a curated exhibition produced by Wallpaper* Magazine during the Salone del Mobile in Milan. We were pleased to launch Prospect, a new initiative in partnership with the consulting firm Klinik. In 2007, DX participated in Canada Week in Mexico and returned to ICFF.
New Design Canada has received support through the International Trade Canada's Program for Export Market Development, the Canadian Heritage Trade Routes Program, provincial governments and Canadian consulates around the world.
