Our school tours and hands-on workshops are designed to enhance core curriculum courses and topics from both secondary and elementary grades.

Our workshops encourage students to become creative problem-solvers and design thinkers as they engage in the design process through active observation, real-life applications, and hands-on design activities.

Current Workshops

Universal Design: Braille Typography
Elementary + Secondary

This workshop will introduce students to the 7 principles of universal design by exploring fundamental principles of typography such as ascenders, terminals, counters, tails, and junctions. After a brief history of accessible typography, students will be challenged to create their own "hybrid font", incorporating the braille alphabet into their letters to create a typeface that both sighted and blind readers can use. Design Exchange will convert the students' fonts into digital files and email them to teachers after the workshop.

Chair Design
Elementary + Secondary

This session will introduce students to the world of industrial design by using an everyday item, the chair, as a jumping-off point. Participants will learn about the evolution of chair design and how designers are incorporating recycled materials into their creations. Finally, students will be assigned a material and a function and challenged to design their own chairs.

Fashion: Sustainable Textiles
Elementary + Secondary

Students will learn how to combat fast fashion in this hands-on workshop. Participants will learn about different fibres, dyes and supply chain models before learning eco-friendly printmaking techniques to upcycle an old garment into something fresh. Groups are encouraged to bring their own garments from home.

Universal Design: Urban Planning and Accessibility
Elementary + Secondary

Students will take a deep dive into each of the winning entries of Design Exchange's 2018 Ontario-wide post-secondary design competition Connect: ONTrack. After learning about barrier-free design and the built environment, participants will follow the Design Thinking process to define, ideate and prototype their own design innovation for the TTC.

Architecture: Canadian Architecture
Elementary + Secondary

Students will learn about Canadian architectural history and will interrogate the idea of what a Canadian building looks like by examining West Coast Style, Chateau Style, Post Modern and First Nations architecture. The workshop will end with a design challenge where students will design an international pavilion representing Canada.
